Secure the account first

Contact the card issuer using the number on the card or official website. Report the charge, ask whether the card number should be replaced, and change compromised credentials.

Use the correct dispute process

The federal billing-error process has content, address, and timing requirements. An online or telephone report may help secure the account, but review the issuer's billing-rights notice to determine whether written notice is also needed.

Keep a complete record

Save the statement, receipt or merchant correspondence, dispute confirmation, delivery record, provisional-credit notice, and final response. State only facts you can support.
