State law controls many details

Repossession notices, cure or reinstatement rights, sale procedures, personal-property access, deficiency balances, and redemption rules vary. Do not assume a general online checklist states the law in your state.

Document what happened

Record the date, location, company, condition of the vehicle, items inside, communications, and every notice. Ask the lender or servicer where personal property can be recovered and preserve receipts.

Review the account and sale notices

Compare the claimed balance, fees, payments, sale price, and deficiency calculation with your records. Contact a licensed attorney or legal-aid office promptly when the facts or notices appear improper.
