How the Credit-Report Dispute Process Works

Identify each disputed field, provide supporting facts, track delivery, and review investigation results.

Make the dispute specific

Identify the bureau, report date, company, account reference using only the last four characters, exact disputed field, what appears, what you believe is correct, and why. Include copies of relevant support.

Choose the proper recipient

You may dispute with a consumer reporting company. A direct dispute to a furnisher has separate requirements and exceptions, including designated-address rules. Sending the same vague text everywhere can make review harder.

Track the investigation

Keep a complete copy, proof of submission, and every response. Review the resulting report and explanation. Deletion is not automatic merely because information was disputed; the legal standard concerns accuracy, completeness, and verification.
